Hydria

Lucania, southern Italy, ca. 360 BCE

Terracotta-coloured ceramic clay. Red-figure hydria with a figurative scene as the central motif – a figure of an athlete with a strigil (scratcher) is leaning with his right arm in a relaxed position against a loosely draped base or stele. He is gazing at a woman who is handing him a victors’ laurel wreath. Her figure is dressed in a long flowing peplos tucked at the waist. Jewels executed in relief with white slip. The rest of the surface is filled with tendrilled spirals, leaves, a meandre, palmette, and laurel leaves. A band of egg-and-dart decorates the edge of the lip.
